Choosing an Online Learning System: Watching out for Diploma Mills, Pt. 3

January 30th, 2009 by Robin Green

Choosing an Online Learning System: Watching out for Diploma Mills, Pt. 3In searching for an accredited learning system for your online degree, sometimes spotting a diploma mill is effortless. Many mills are targeted towards people who actually want fake diplomas, and are willing to pay for them. Mills charge fees ranging from $50 to $5,000 for a bachelor’s, master’s, Ph.D. or other degree.

Oftentimes, buyers only expected to pay the fee to acquire a fake diploma. Other fake online learning systems require buyers to complete an essay or some other simple work before sending out the degree.

However, many degree mills are much more difficult to identify as such. Do your research, ask questions, and study the institution’s website before sending any cash to begin working towards your degree.

Choosing an Online Learning System: Watching out for Diploma Mills, Pt. 2

Choosing an Online Learning System: Watching out for Diploma Mills, Pt. 2Diploma mills are often named to sound confusingly similar to those of prestigious accredited academic institutions. And accreditation mills–the false accreditation bodies that put their stamps of approval on diploma mill learning systems–often go so far as to model their websites after real accrediting agencies.

Diploma mills have often succeeded in creating a bad rapport for online learning systems by casting a shadow of doubt on all diplomas earned online. However, as more people become enlightened on the differences between legitimate online degrees and degree mills, this is beginning to change.

Given the treacherously elaborate efforts of diploma and accreditation mills to appear legitimate, how can potential students spot a mill for what it is? See the next post.

Choosing an Online Learning System: Watching out for Diploma Mills, Pt. 1

Choosing an Online Learning System: Watching out for Diploma Mills, Pt. 1If you’re thinking of working towards a degree, either as a stepping stone to a career change or to make yourself more valuable in your current job, a flexible, affordable online learning system may be right for you. However, in choosing an online learning system, there are some features to watch out for.

Beware the diploma mill.

A diploma mill (or sometimes “degree mill”) is an organization that awards academic degrees and diplomas based on substandard academic study, or no academic study, and without recognition by official education accrediting bodies.

Students may be led to believe they are engaging in a legitimate learning system and earning an academic degree, while actually they are just creating more profits for the organization. Some diploma mills claim accreditation by non-approved or unrecognized accrediting bodies which are created solely for the purpose of providing a guise of authenticity.

Technical Learning Systems for Transferable Skills

Some transferable skills are more tangible than others. While it may be difficult in a half hour interview to demonstrate your full range of skills, such as your ability to manage time, motivate coworkers, or coordinate tasks, many technical skills are easy to confirm. They look nice on resumes. Although all transferable skills are useful in different settings, some concrete technical skills may be worth taking on as an online learning system or face-to-face class to give you an extra edge in the job market.

Consider an online learning system for acquiring technical transferable skills. In just a few weeks, you may be able to learn basic web design or become certified in a software program. Choose an online learning system that works well with your schedule and professional goals.

Life as Learning System: Transferable Skills, Pt. 3Have you completed an online learning system and are ready to begin your job search? Do a little brainstorming before resume-writing or interviewing. Most people have a wealth of transferable skills under their belts that they don’t even realize they have. If you’ve ever held a job or undergone any type of learning system (just about everyone!) you’ve probably picked up a host of skills that may be applicable to your new job.

One transferable skill is communication, which includes things like: writing concisely, speaking effectively, expressing ideas, facilitating group discussion, providing appropriate feedback, negotiating, perceiving nonverbal messages, persuading, reporting information, describing feelings, interviewing, and editing.

Another is researching and planning, which includes: forecasting and predicting, creating ideas, identifying and solving problems, imagining alternatives, identifying resources, gathering information, setting goals, extracting important information, defining needs, analyzing, and developing evaluation strategies. Take out a piece of paper and make a mind map of your professional and learning system experiences. Maximize your professional marketability.

Life as Learning System: Transferable Skills, Pt. 2

January 28th, 2009 by Robin Green

Life as Learning System: Transferable Skills, Pt. 2Are you an online learning system student looking to start a job or change careers? Market your transferable skills.

At the core of transferable skills are three kinds: technical, data, and people skills. Technical skills refer to your knowledge of technology like computer programs or learning management systems, or more practical technology skills like the ability to construct or repair. Data skills refers to things like good record keeping, performing research, organizing a classroom learning system, or detailed analysis-writing. And people skills includes communication, leadership, coaching and training.

However, a more comprehensive break-down would put transferable skills into five sub-sections. These are: Communication; Research and Planning; Human Relations; Organization, Management and Leadership; and Work Survival. Experience working in an online learning system or in a team project might spread across many of these sub-sections.

Life as Learning System: Transferable Skills, Pt. 1

January 28th, 2009 by Robin Green

Life as Learning System: Transferable Skills, Pt. 1As workplaces change with the global economy, a wide range of abilities called “transferable skills” becomes increasingly important. Experience working collaboratively in an online learning system, LMS or professional environment is often good fodder for transferable skill-building.

What are transferable skills, exactly?

They are skills that you’ve accumulated throughout your life in settings such as jobs, education and collaborative learning systems, parenting and childcare, hobbies and sports–almost any activity. They include abilities like multi-tasking, delegating responsibility, motivating others, assessing and evaluating one’s own work as well as others’, attention to details, and dealing with obstacles and challenges. Transferable skills are just that–skills that are transferable and applicable to what you want to do in your next job.
