What is SCORM? Do I need it? | LMS

We get a lot of questions about the acronym SCORM, particularly from organizations that are just beginning elearning and online Training initiatives. So here are a few things you’ll want to know about SCORM.

Technical definition straight out of Wikipedia:

Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) is a collection of standards and specifications for web-based e-learning. It defines communications between client side content and a host system called the run-time environment, which is commonly supported by a learning management system. SCORM also defines how content may be packaged into a transferable .zip file called "Package Interchange Format.

How we try and explain it:

SCORM can be used to create a set of rules by which a learner would experience a specific training module; either by imposing time constraints, or by placing a standard order in which the curriculum is viewed. If you want to prevent “ blow through’ of a module, by limiting the speed in which a learner can migrate through a module, or if you want to be sure that they look at your content in a specific order, SCORM can do this for you.

While some organizations require that curriculum delivered is rendered in a SCORM format, it is not a standard that is obligatory in most environments. So if you are creating a course that needs to be approved or certified by a governmental body or NGO that necessitates the use of SCORM standards, you’ll want to purchase some SCORM authoring software from a recognized vendor. Coggno integrates with all SCORM software. When purchasing this software we always recommend that you purchase it from a company that offers a level of support to assist you in becoming familiar with its use and functionality, your Coggno representative can make some suggestions.
