T-GROW, stands for: Topic Grow Reality Obstacles / Options Way Forward We learn the most effective questions to use with this particular model, in order to get the most from yourself and your clients, and ensuring that you achieve all goals that are set. SMART Coaching Model This is another favoured coaching model. It is great for being specific when setting goals ensuring that they are realistic and measurable. The SMART goal setting method is a five stage process, although it is not a rigid process. It is a checklist that ensures you include the five steps surrounding your goals. SMART stands for: Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timed As part of an exercise, we use the SMART coaching model, in a real life example, of someone who would like to achieve the goal of wanting to earn more money. Wheel Of Life The wheel of life is one of the most important tools in the coaching toolkit. It is perfect for beginning the process of identifying goals and areas the client wishes to focus on. It is simplistic but yet powerful. It provides the client with an instant visual of what it is they want. A client often knows they want something to change, but don’t know where to start, so the wheel of life is a great place to begin. Each segment of the wheel represent an area of life and focus, such as: Friends & Social Contacts Health Money & Finance Personal Development Fun & Recreation Work & Career Relationships & Romance Family Albert Mehrabian Model This is communication model, which works on the principle that communication is more than just words. In fact we learn the words you say are just 7% of the message. Pitch, volume and pace make up 38%, and body language accounts for a huge 55%. This communication model is a great asset for any coach to learn, and for those people wishing to become more effective communicators. Matching and Mirroring Mirroring and matching can help build rapport between two people. Rapport is connecting with another person and sharing a sense of ease, a trust, a familiarity with each other, or more commonly to click with. Good rapport helps with communication and interaction between coach and client. Rapport happens naturally or it can be built. One key way to help build rapport, is to physically match and mirror the other person. Clean Language: Its Use In Coaching Clean language is a communications methodology, developed by David J Grove, a counselling psychologist, during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Clean language encourages a sense of clarity in communication between people. It offers helpful techniques for people that work closely with other people, such as in coaching. We cover the principles of clean language and learn the twelve basic questions that accompany the clean language approach. Within these questions, there are certain styles, including: Developing Questions Sequence and Source Questions Intention Questions Passive Aggressive Assertive Model of Communication We can identify passive, aggressive and assertive behaviour, by observing the way communication is conveyed. This module includes an exercise for you to identify sentences, that are either, passive, aggressive or assertive. How Did You Get on? In this module, we look at the answers to the passive, aggressive or assertive, exercise. It is a great opportunity to explore your awareness of this style of communication. How Assertive Are You? This is a great exercise to discover just how assertive you are. You get the opportunity to score yourself and see where you fall on the scale of being assertive. Feedback In this module we learn what feedback is, and why it is so important. As a coach, giving feedback will expand your clients unknown potential and reduce their blind spots. In fact, effective feedback can improve performance by 39%. We learn how and why we should own our feedback in order to be constructive, without being critical. We finish this module by learning the feedback styles of the 2:2 rule, and the feedback sandwich. Administration In this module we are introduced to a number of documents that will help you in practising as a life coach. This is a particularly important section for those people who are interested in training as a life coach and have plans to set up their own life coaching practice. This section includes information on The Data Protection Act, as well as coaching ethics and standards. The syllabus in detail: Section 1. Introduction In the first section, we look at the course outline as well as the course objectives. We meet the course instructor and gain a deeper understanding of what we can expect to gain from the course. Section 2. The Basics of CBT In this section we cover the basics of CBT. We discover what CBT is and who uses it. With the use of examples, we learn how children can benefit from CBT as well as seeing how it can be used in the home to resolve conflict between family members. We finish this section by looking at how the principles of CBT can be applied to our everyday life with the use of a thoughts, feelings and behaviours diary. Section 3. Anxiety Section three is all about anxiety. We learn what anxiety is and how if affects us. We also explore how experiencing a certain level of anxiety is a good thing, and can actually help to keep us safe. With the use of examples, we start to see how too much anxiety can affect us in a negative way. Using the downloadable diary, we see ways in which we can identify anxiety in order to recognise any negative cycles. This section concludes with looking at coping cards and how they can be a useful tool when experiencing anxiety. Section 4. Let's Do CBT We begin by taking a closer look at negative cycles. With the use of examples, we further explore the subject of negative cycles surrounding anxiety, as well as anger and depression. We move onto the clarification table, which helps us to identify a thought from a feeling. This is very important as you progress through the course, as being able to correctly identify one from the other is essential as we develop our sense of self. This section ends with a practical exercise. Section 5. Identifying Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviours In this section we learn about metaphors and metaphorical thinking, and more importantly, how it can be useful when trying to describe how it is we are feeling. With the help of examples we are introduced to creative diaries, and how they can be developed to make them personal to us. Creative diaries are just one of the very many downloadable that accompany this section. We look at two case studies of how someone has used CBT to address an ongoing issue of anger as well as someone else who is using CBT to address OCD. Section 6. Understanding Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviours We progress through the course by looking at how our thoughts feelings and behaviours impact on each other. With the use of case studies, we look at automatic negative thoughts and how they affect how we feel and ultimately how we behave (our actions). We are introduced to the negative automatic thought diary and learn how we can use this to identify any negative patterns that might be occurring for us. We then move on to looking at thinking traps and thinking styles, that have a negative impact on us and then take a look at ways in which we can introduce a more balanced alternative way of thinking. Section 7. Making Changes As the title suggests, this section is all about making changes and challenging our thoughts. We put in practise what we've learned so far and with the help of the newly learned techniques, we can effectively challenge negative thoughts feelings and behaviours whilst making profound changes, and regaining control of our life. Section 8. It's All About You This final section covers the importance of continued practise and we look at ways in which we can easily integrate the principles of CBT into part of our everyday life. Included in the course, are a number of different meditation techniques, including ‘Body Scan’ and ‘Sitting Meditation’. You’ll also find many mindfulness training exercises, all designed in helping you realise, an awareness of the present. SECTION 1. – Introduction to Mindfulness Training We start by learning the basics of Mindfulness. and understanding ways in which it can change our life. This first section includes training in mindfulness meditation. As well as a fully guided audio, we learn how to explore our experience of the meditation by using the bespoke meditation diary. Section one also introduces us to mindfulness breathing. This includes a fully guided mediation, that focuses on our breathing. We also learn how to use the mindfulness breathing meditation diary. This diary is also designed to record our experience of the meditation, encouraging us to explore our thoughts and physical sensations. SECTION 2.- Body Scan Mindfulness training includes a number of meditations. In section two, we will learn how to bring mindfulness awareness to your experience of the body scan meditation. We’ll also demonstrate how you can introduce mindfulness training into your daily routine, and start to get maximum benefits, right away. This is learning how to experience the joys of simple awareness. Simple awarenss teaches us how we can appreciate everyday experiences in a more mindful way. By doing so, we quickly learn the joys of these simple events, which in turn, help make us happier, healthier people. SECTION 3. - Sitting Meditation In this section we start with mastering the sitting meditation. In the sitting meditation, we learn by way of guided audio, how to concentrate on our breathing as the key object for awareness. We learn to experience how it feels to live in the moment, without judgement. We then move on to the mindfulness RAIN diary. RAIN stands for, recognise, allowing, investigating and natural awareness. Going through these stages, we learn to let go of preconceived thoughts, and instead listen in a kind, receptive way to our body, calling on our natural curiosity as we focus inward. We finish this section by looking at some examples of RAIN diary entries, and see how gentle investigation, can easily open a natural awareness. SECTION 4. – Mindfulness Training Exercises In this section we have lots of different Mindfulness exercises for you to try. Some are concerned with Mindfulness therapy and some are designed to develop your awareness, helping you to be in, and with, the present moment. There are lots of tips, techniques and methods that you can employ, in order to: Strengthen your self awareness Strengthen your ability to focus your attention on the present Bring you out of a state of unconsciousness and back to a mindful state Exercises include, one minute mindfulness, ten second count, mindfulness trigger exercise and the conscious observation exercise. We finish this section off by learning to use the pleasant events diary. By having an awareness of simple everyday events, we learn to gain joy from such things as the warmth of the sun, smelling flowers, or even experiencing a smile from another person. SECTION 5. – Practising Silent Meditation and STOP This section is designed to help you progress from guided meditation, onto silent, mindful meditation. We've included two audio tracks which are silent, all but for the sound of a gentle bell. The bell will sound at the beginning of the audio and sound again at the end. This will be either 15 minutes or 30 minutes, depending on the track you have chosen. The gentle sound of the bell is designed to help build confidence as you learn to pace yourself unguided. This section also covers the STOP diary. The STOP diary is concerned with learning to stop, to take a breath, to be open, to observe, and finally to proceed. With the help examples, we use this diary as an exercise to help us in becoming more aware of our personal environment. By practising to stop and observe what is going on for us, we can learn to react positively to situations, bringing us a natural harmony and a more peaceful life. SECTION 6. – Mindfulness Training for Emotional and Physical Pain In this section we have a look at how, with Mindfulness training, we can react differently to emotional and physical pain. Mindfulness enables us to separate the physical sensations of pain, from the emotional suffering of pain. This can be done by learning how to apply a mindful attitude towards pain. This is a really powerful technique and with just a little practise, can bring great comfort and tremendous relief. We then move onto using mindfulness, in order to address emotional pain. Using the applied techniques, we learn to experience emotional discomfort with a sense of curiosity, rather than with negative judgement. We are encouraged to identify with ourself as the observer of the experience, rather than the experience itself. This section concludes with the exercise of using the communication diary. This exercise explores our relationship, not only with ourself, but with others and the world. SECTION 7. - Conclusion In this concluding section, we look back at each section in turn, making sure we've understood the learning objective of each and ensuring we get the very most from this unique mindfulness course.
