Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. It is best understood as the clinical result of two linked processes, airway inflammation, and bronchial hyper-reactivity. While bronchial hyper-reactivity is often genetically determined, viral infection may induce asthma. Airway inflammation is often triggered by allergies or viral illness. This course will review signs, symptoms, and treatment of asthma and asthmatic emergencies.
