Battling Inequalities in U.S. Learning Systems, Pt. 2

Coggno Inc. | Mar, 12 2009

In a bid for a more educated and competitive workforce, President Obama has said he will seek higher standards in U.S. learning systems. Speaking to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in his first major address on education as president, he said: “Economic progress and educational achievement have always gone hand-in-hand in America.”

Obama’s goal is an ambitious one. He repeated the target set in his February 24 address to Congress: By 2020, the U.S. should have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. In order to get there, some creative thinking will be necessary and sacrifices will need to be made. The integration of technologies like LMSs and other online collaboration tools will likely play a role. But the idea of merit pay for educators, linking teacher salaries to learning system performance, is one strategy that may not set well with many people.
