What Are The Requirements For A Certified Food Protection Manager?

Starting March 1st, 2023, all food establishments must at least have one person with a certified food protection manager (CFPM) certificate. The CFPM doesn’t have to be there, but they’ll need to have a valid certificate with them. CFPMs ensure everyone in charge is up to date on food safety.

Q. Do I Need 1 CFPM Per Shift Or Establishment?

A. If you’re running a restaurant or store, you’ll need at least one person with a CFPM certificate.

Q. What Happens If My CFPM Quits Their Job?

A. You have 60 days to hire a new CFPM or have a current employee take ANSI-accredited CFPM training.

Q. Does A CFPM Need A Food Worker Card?

A. A food worker card is required if a CFPM works with:

  • Unwrapped food
  • Food equipment or utensils
  • Any surface on which food is placed after unwrapping

A food safety CFPM must also know Washington food safety rules and regulations. Most courses accredited by ANSI do not include specific Washington food safety rules. We recommend that food safety CFPMs also obtain their food safety card.
