Do you have vaguely fond memories of a certain grade school or high school class? I have several. In each I remember my teacher well, and the dynamic of the classroom, and even some of my classmates; but one grey area is the actual learning content of the class. What did we analyze in Mr. Hanson’s English class? I scarcely remember, though I do recall a few of his sayings and facial expressions.
How can educators make their learning content more memorable? An understanding of the human need to discover, through mistakes and revelations, is important in any attempt to educate. The classes in which I was put on the spot on a daily basis, and encouraged to make mistakes, are the ones whose learning content I remember best.
