Periodic inspection is a complete inspection that includes all the frequent items plus deformed, cracked, or corroded members; loose bolts or rivets; cracked or worn sheaves and drums; worn, cracked, or distorted pins, bearings, shafts, gears, rollers, and locking and clamping devices; excessive wear on brake system parts, linings, pawls, and ratchets; and load, wind, and other indicators over their full range for significant inaccuracies. What Are the Rope and Idle-Crane Inspection Rules?
Running ropes get their own regime under paragraph (m). A thorough inspection of all ropes must be made at least once a month, and a certification record including the date, the signature of the person who performed the inspection, and an identifier for the ropes inspected must be kept on file where readily available to appointed personnel. Any rope that has been idle for a month or more due to shutdown or crane storage must be thoroughly inspected before use by an appointed person whose approval is required for further use, with its own certification record.
Idle cranes follow a parallel schedule under (j)(4). A crane idle for one month or more but less than six months gets a frequent inspection plus the rope inspection before returning to service. Seasonal manufacturers and plants with a mothballed second crane bay routinely miss the six-month threshold, because the crane looks fine and nobody logged the date it stopped being used. The fix is administrative, not mechanical: log the last-use date, and let the calendar tell you which inspection applies. What Rigging and Load-Handling Training Does the Standard Trigger?
Paragraph (n) governs handling the load, and it is where operator training and rigger training separate. The load must be attached to the load block hook by slings or other approved devices, care must be taken that the sling clears all obstacles, and the load must be well secured and properly balanced in the sling or lifting device before it is lifted more than a few inches. Load attachment chains and rope slings showing the defects described in the frequent-inspection paragraphs must be removed from service.
The operator must test the brakes each time a load approaching the rated load is handled, by raising the load a few inches and applying the brakes. Periodic inspection reports with the interval justified against the crane’s activity and service severity.
Maintenance records matter too.
