Description

This Campus Lightning Protection Systems Training provides an overview of Lightning Protection Systems and the requirements that govern their construction and performance. This training draws from several applicable standards, including NFPA 780, UL 96, and UL 96A, to introduce key regulations about each element of a complete lightning protection system. The two modules that form this training include the following information. Below is a list of modules included in this eLearning bundle.

Module One

  • Module One provides an overview of lightning protection systems by reviewing the basic concepts surrounding these systems and the key Standards that pertain to their installation and performance. For example, these Standards outline specific material requirements that apply to every component of a lightning protection system. This module also details key requirements about strike termination devices, the initial interceptors of lightning strikes, as well as critical methods to ensure that entire structures are covered in lightning-proof zones of protection.

Module Two

  • Module Two continues by addressing the installation requirements for other components of a lightning protection system. The first two, cable conductors and grounding electrodes, provide a safe and effective path for dangerous lightning currents to bypass the structure and reach ground. Bonding and surge protection devices complement this process by protecting the structure from dangerous side-flashes and surges. This module also briefly identifies other miscellaneous structures that have specific lightning protection system requirements.

Course Topics

  • Lightning Protection Systems and Standards
  • System Component Materials
  • Strike Termination Devices
  • Zones of Protection
  • Cable Conductors
  • Grounding Electrodes
  • Bonding
  • Surge Protection Devices

Duration: 2 hours

What you'll learn

Identify the fundamental purpose and principles of lightning protection systems, as well as the standards regulating their construction and performance.

Understand minimum material requirements for different classes of structures as well as measures to protect system components against mechanical damage and corrosion.

Calculate the appropriate placement of strike termination devices to provide maximum protection from lighting strikes.

Understand the different types of cable conductors, as well as the key regulations governing their use.

Explain appropriate methods for grounding to dissipate lightning discharge without damage to the structure.
