Patient Rights

Every patient who enters a healthcare facility is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect — and to be empowered to make informed decisions about their own care. These principles are the foundation of the Patient Bill of Rights, a set of legally guaranteed protections first developed by the American Hospital Association in 1973 and revised in 1992. Healthcare workers have both an ethical and legal responsibility to understand, uphold, and protect these rights in every patient interaction. This course provides healthcare employees with a thorough understanding of the rights patients are guaranteed by law and the obligations providers must fulfill to protect them.
 
 Learners will explore the specific patient rights established under 42 CFR 482.13 and 42 U.S.C.A. 1395dd, including the right to treatment, privacy, safety, and confidentiality of medical records. The course covers all three forms of informed consent, the different types of advance directives and their purpose, and the strict criteria governing the proper use of restraint and seclusion. Patient visitation rights are also addressed, ensuring healthcare workers understand the full scope of their obligations to patients and their families.
 
 Upon completion, employees will be equipped to recognize potential violations of patient rights and take appropriate action to protect the individuals in their care.
