What you'll learn
Inspect all front-of-vehicle components and evaluate tires and wheels for proper type, tread depth, air pressure, damage, lug nut condition, and oil bath hubcap levels.
Conduct a walkaround inspection of brake lines, brake pads, rotors, and air brake system components, and identify signs of wear, leaks, or insufficient air pressure that would prevent safe vehicle operation.
Examine the undercarriage, coupling system where applicable, and cargo area to confirm structural integrity, proper fifth wheel and kingpin connection, and safe cargo containment before departure.
Description
The exterior inspection is the most visible and comprehensive phase of the pre-trip process. Before a commercial motor vehicle moves a single mile, the driver must walk the full perimeter of the vehicle and examine its outside components to confirm that all systems are mechanically sound, properly secured, and compliant with FMCSA requirements. This module covers the front of the vehicle — including lights, reflectors, and windshield wipers — as well as tires and wheels, brake lines and components visible during walkaround, the undercarriage, the coupling system for applicable vehicles, and the cargo area. A disciplined exterior inspection protects the driver, the public, and the cargo by catching defects before they become emergencies on the road.
