What you'll learn

Participants will be able to identify and apply key steps in a transdisciplinary feature matching process, including the use of relevant assessments to gather individualized information about a learner’s strengths and support needs, and map these characteristics onto appropriate AAC modality features.
Participants will be able to articulate the defined roles, responsibilities, and shared resources within the assessment protocol to enhance interdisciplinary communication, streamline decisionmaking, and improve documentation practices.
Participants will be able to describe and implement procedures for assessing learner preference across AAC modalities or speechgenerating devices, reference supporting research for this measure, and incorporate caregiver social validity data to inform and finalize modality selection.

Description

This session introduces a practical, team-based AAC assessment protocol that combines feature matching with a structured preference assessment to guide thoughtful, evidence-aligned decisions. Participants will learn how incorporating learner preference can lead to more efficient communication outcomes, walk away with a clear, replicable framework that supports collaboration across disciplines, and puts the learner at the center of every AAC decision.
