Electrical Safety for Healthcare

Electricity is fundamental to delivering healthcare services, powering everything from diagnostic equipment and surgical tools to patient monitoring systems and life-support devices. Yet electricity also presents serious risks — with Bureau of Labor Statistics data reporting approximately 2,000 workers sent to burn centers annually from electrical burns alone, and an estimated 7,600 total disabling and non-disabling electrical injuries occurring in the workplace each year. In the healthcare environment, where electricity and patients intersect constantly, the stakes are especially high.
 
 This course provides healthcare workers with a foundational understanding of electrical safety, equipping them to recognize and respond to electrical hazards before they result in injury. Learners will explore the basic principles of how electricity works — including Ohm's Law — and gain a clear understanding of how electrical current affects the human body and the types of injuries it can cause.
 
 The course covers common electrical hazards found specifically in healthcare settings, safe work practices for working around or with electrical equipment, and proper hazard reporting procedures. A dedicated section on emergency response ensures employees know how to act quickly and appropriately when an electrical incident occurs.
 
 Upon completion, employees will be better equipped to identify electrical risks in their work environment and take proactive steps to protect themselves, their colleagues, and their patients.
