This course is designed to provide comprehensive training on the requirements for the transportation of hazardous waste within the United States (U.S.) as outlined in Titles 40 CFR Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and 49 CFR Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. The course focuses on enhancing awareness and understanding of the regulatory concepts for shipping hazardous waste by ground mode of transport.
Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the general requirements and procedures for shipping materials subject to the hazardous waste manifest requirements of the U.S. EPA specified in 40 CFR Part 262. The course covers key topics such as:
- Definitions: An overview of important definitions and criteria for items such as solid waste, types of generators, and transporters, together with the purpose of the regulations and their framework.
- Characteristics: Identification of hazardous waste types and associated codes.
- Packaging and Communication: Explanation of marking, labeling, and documentation requirements, and implementing appropriate measures when hazardous waste is present.
- Storage and Safety: Explanation of Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA) versus 90-Day Storage Area, additional safety measures, and inspections requirements.
- Exclusions: Explanation whether a material is exempt or excluded from the hazardous waste requirements, and how certain exceptions to the regulations may apply.
