Frequently Asked Questions
This TDGR course is required for anyone in Canada whose job involves dangerous goods in any way. That includes employees who handle, ship, receive, offer goods for transport, or transport hazardous materials by road. Warehouse teams, drivers, shipping and receiving staff, and even office personnel who prepare or review shipping documents all fall under this requirement. If you’re involved at any point in the chain of custody, Transport Canada expects you to be trained and certified.
The course is fully online and self-paced, so you can complete it when it works best for you. The main training modules take about 190 minutes (roughly three hours), plus some additional time to complete the final assessment. You can access the course from a computer, tablet, or smartphone, whether you’re at the office or on the go.
Along with core TDG concepts like classification and general awareness, the course covers requirements that are specific to Canada. This includes Emergency Response Assistance Plans (ERAPs), Canadian reporting obligations, and a dedicated section on cross-border shipments between Canada and the United States. This is especially useful for companies that regularly move goods across the border.
A TDG certificate for ground transportation is valid for three years (36 months). After that, refresher training is required to remain compliant. If you change employers, you’ll need to be re-certified, since TDG certificates are issued on a per-employer basis and cannot be transferred.
